As a large country with 20% percent of population of the world, China consumes 10% of the world energy. China will double its energy consumption in the near future. As an energy resource of virtually unlimited potential, wind energy is an important part of China energy strategy. Wind energy now is economically competitive with the conventional energy source.
China has a theoretical wind energy potential estimated at 3,226 GW at a 10 meter hub height and a practical wind energy potential estimated at 253GW.
China is abundant in wind energy resource with the capacity reaching 1266MW in 2005. It provides potential large capacity of wind farms. Today wind power in China is developing rapidly. According to a Chinese government plan, by 2010 China’s installed capacity of wind power generation will be 5 gigawatts, and by 2020 it will achieve 30 gigawatts. China will be the largest wind power country in the world. By 2020, 10% of China’s power generation capacity will come from renewable energy. In order to realize this objective, several hundred sets of 1500 kilowatt and larger wind power generators will be required.
The Chinese government gives strong support in developing wind energy industry. China’s Renewable Energy Law was formulated and come into effect on 1 January, 2006. The law stipulates that power generating company must sign a connection agreement with the wind power generating company to incorporate into the national grid, and wind farms enjoy a reduced VAT. The import duty of wind power equipment and accessories can be waived if it is for wind farm developer’s own use. The legislation gives funding and tax incentives to renewable energy projects. China’s anticipated entry into the global renewable energy market is expected to have a profound impact on the global industry. The successes of wind energy in the UK will help China, and the law starts a renewable revolution in China.
Although China wind turbine industry has been developing for years, the technology is not as advanced as that of Europe. China has to import most large capacity wind turbine generators from developed countries. European companies Such as Vestas, GE, Nordex, GAMESA have a dominant position in the market. Most of them have set up factories and begun to make the production in China. In 2005, many foreign wind energy companies entered China, such as GAMESA (SPAIN), GE Wind (GERMANY), VESTAS (DENMARK), NORDEX (GERMANY), DFSTW (GERMANY), and HAFEI (FINLAND). However their production can hardly meet the demand of the newly set up wind farms now.
UK has world leading technology in wind energy. It will produce the next generation of high-efficiency wind turbines, China welcome UK invest in this Sector.
